| Abstract: | 本論文主要以訊息結構的角度探討洋涇浜英語(China Coast Pidgin)的主題及主題位置。不同於傳統語法以主詞-受詞為主描述語言結構，訊息結構理論(information structure)重視語用及語境，以功能為導向歸納在傳遞訊息或語用上如何影響語法。本研究的重點為：洋涇浜英語的主題位置傾向於句首、句中或句尾？另外，次要的研究則會探討以訊息結構的角度，洋涇浜英語受到較多廣東話或英語的影響。本論文的研究方法採用Knud Lambrecht的理論架構，以其理論中的預設 (presupposition)、可識別性(identifiability)和指稱對象的活躍程度(activation)三個訊息結構範疇作為判斷句子中最適合作為主題的指稱，及主題位於句首、句中或句末。所分析的語料來源為清代語言學家唐景星所著«英語集全»一書第六集，該書中所記錄之洋涇浜英語為相關研究者認為可信度高的相關語料。
經過分析，我們發現洋涇浜英語的主題傾向位於句首，且該語言以主題-述題的訊息結構為主。然而，我們也發現了許多不存在主題的句子以及其他訊息結構，特別是識別結構(identificational structure)在語料庫中亦有可觀的佔比。除此之外，我們發現洋涇浜英語中許多與訊息結構有關的現象，受到廣東話的影響較英語的影響多。
This thesis evaluates topic and topic position in China Coast Pidgin, a contact language spoken in the 19th century in Canton, from the point of view of information structure, which reveals how a piece of information or the context influences grammatical phenomena in a language. Our major research is to observe the features of topic and topic position in the China Coast Pidgin data. Our secondary analysis is to identify whether the language is influenced more by Cantonese or English. We rely on the theoretical framework by Knud Lambrecht and use the three information categories in his framework, namely presupposition, identifiability and the status of activation of a referent, as the criteria to evaluate the most suitable topic in each clause in our China Coast Pidgin corpus.
Our analysis discovered that topics in China Coast Pidgin tend to occur clause-initially, and the majority of the clauses are the topic-comment structure. Furthermore, a large proportion of China Coast Pidgin clauses have no topics. Additionally, there is a diversity of information structure categories in China Coast Pidgin, including the identificational structure, the scene-setting structure and the event-reporting structure. The frequency of the identificational structure is particularly noteworthy. Finally, most of the phenomena in China Coast Pidgin related to information structure are substantially influenced by Cantonese rather than English. |
