本所於89學年度正式奉准成立碩士班，積極發展宗教學術教育。為顧及未來宗教學術發展之需，以培養高級的宗教研究人才，在跨學科與跨宗教傳統的訓練之下，使宗教研究成為具有深度的專業學門，實有必要成立博士班課程，故本所於94年向教育部提出申請成立「宗教研究所博士班」，96年教育部核准設立，本所隨即著手準備，於96學年度正式招收宗教研究所博士班第一屆學生。 The Graduate Institute of Religious Studies (GIRS) at National Chengchi University opened in 2000, and was the first department of its kind at a National University in Taiwan. The Ph D. degree programs was founded in 2007.
