This research project investigates (a-)political discourses constructed in news photographs in 1980s Taiwanese mainstream press. It takes a critical perspective through content and textual analysis. The materials to be studied include congress news photographs taken by photojournalists from China Times group, and 9.21 Earthquake images from photographic monographs published by three news media. The main question in this research is: did these news images in 1990s Taiwan play an important role to advance Taiwan’s democratization in a progressive way, or they reinforced the mainstream politics and restrained the deepening and substantiality of Taiwan’s democracy and politics? This project endeavors to challenges the status quo of photojournalistic practice by reassessing its legitimacy.
