Verb is described as a main unit that forms the core of any sentence in many researches both in Slavonic and general linguistics. The scientists came to the conclusion that the verb, like other linguistic units, is a system with a core and surrounding peripheral phenomena. The core part of verbal system is historically stable and not exposed to significant changes, whereas the peripheral part reflects the processes that show a global trends in the verbal system changes. These changes are primarily forming in everyday Russian speech practice and can not be ignored in teaching Russian as a foreign language. The study of this article is focused on verbal variance as a peripheral phenomenon in the verbal system of the Russian language and on the methods of studying and teaching of the Russian verb. The object of consideration is the verbal variance on phonetic and morphological levels, i.e. at levels that do not affect the lexical meaning of the verbs. The verbal variants are considered in the historical, social, cultural and contextual aspects. A great attention is paid to the role of context in distinguishing verbal variants. Materials and examples for this study were taken from contemporary pronouncing dictionaries of the Russian language, as well as from the student’s tests in the course “Culture of the Russian language”.
