Many studies have explored service innovations regarding the use of information technologies, yet few have addressed the strategic leveraging of IT investment for sustaining competitiveness. The objective of this paper is to examine strategies that firms have applied in leveraging advanced information technologies for service innovation in highly competitive markets. To understand a firm’s continuous strategic changes and resource configuration, this study will track the transition of strategies for IT-enabled service innovation. The analysis of strategy is developed based on two dimensions: (1) IT capability, referring to a firm’s ability to deploy IT-based resources, combined with (2) the firm’s complementary resources, including customer and supplier relationships, financial capital and human resources. This study plans to investigate service innovation cases in the convenience-store industry and the telecommunication industry in Taiwan. These two industries are in intensively competitive markets in terms of the reduced sales growth, market maturity, and innovations undertaken. The expected results from cross-case analysis will reveal different types of strategies firms apply in leveraging IT for competitiveness followed by the path of strategy transition during the service innovation cycle. In the meantime, resource-reconfiguration mechanisms in different sourcing approaches will be analyzed. A strategy model that includes the issues of the strategy content, path of strategy transitions, resource-reconfiguration mechanisms, and resource sourcing approaches will be presented. This research plans to provide a thorough examination of the resource effects on strategy aimed at IT-enabled service innovation. This is to complement and add to the research of strategic use of IT for business innovation from a resource-based view. It is hoped that this model will provide a guideline for firms to assess critical resources and decide their strategies toward different IT-enabled service innovations.
