Indigenous family centres function as preventative support for Indigenous families and children. Indigenous families have been historically under-served and abused by systems designed to assimilate and homogenise Indigenous populations. This research shows how the historical legacy of colonialism has affected the Australian and Taiwanese Family Centres and how their respective service scopes are directly related to the needs of the Indigenous communities within those contexts. Using an amended Hardiker’s preventative care model, this research compares Australian and Taiwanese Indigenous family centres to further shed light on the need for contextualisation, empowerment and reconciliation in Indigenous welfare and social work. Australian Aboriginal child and family centres function as primary preventions, whereas Taiwanese Indigenous family centres function as secondary-level preventions. |
