Disaster news can elicit audience empathy and prompt prosocial behavior in responding to distant events by applying different frames (Hornstein et al., 1975; Beyerlein & Sikkink, 2008). Among the five moral foundations proposed by Graham et al. (2009), audiences are particularly sensitive to the harm/care and fairness/reciprocity frame (Huang et al., 2022; Xu et al., 2020). However, it remains unclear about their framing effect. This study aims to explore how morality frames affect audience empathy and prosocial behavior.
This study applied a single factor between-subjects experimental design (morality frame: harm/care vs. fairness/reciprocity) in the context of Libya floods in 2023, focusing on Taiwanese (Alkhshali et al., 2023; Fleming, 2023). A total of 460 eligible participants were recruited online and randomly assigned to one of the conditions, resulting in 240 participants in the harm/care condition and 220 in the fairness/reciprocity condition. The findings suggest that both types of perceived morality are positively related to prosocial behavior intention, with the perceived harm/care foundation eliciting stronger prosocial behavior intention than the perceived fairness/reciprocity foundation. Additionally, empathy mediates the relationship between perceived morality and prosocial behavior intention, with cognitive empathy emerging as a stronger mediator than affective empathy. Implications for framing theory and suggestions for future studies are presented.
