Assessing the Socio-Economic Vulnerabilities of Belizean Households during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Exploring Mitigation Strategies for Economic and Social Recovery
    By
    (Nissa Marie Dawson)
The thesis, "Assessing the Socio-Economic Vulnerabilities of Belizean Households during the COVID-19 Pandemic and Exploring Mitigation Strategies for Economic and Social Recovery," delves into Belize's socio-economic landscape amidst the challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through an extensive analysis encompassing inflation, Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment, mental health, education, healthcare, and food security, the thesis illuminates the vulnerabilities faced by households across Belize.
Key findings reveal pressing challenges, including escalating inflation rates, declining GDP, and rising unemployment, underscoring the urgent need for mitigation efforts. A central focus of the thesis is advocating for cohesive strategies to foster economic resilience. This entails promoting proactive policy initiatives to stabilize inflation rates, foster economic growth, and develop sustainable employment opportunities. Additionally, targeted interventions are proposed to support vulnerable groups, particularly women, youth, and marginalized communities, who bear the brunt of socio-economic consequences.
    iii
Collaborative efforts among governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and international partners emerge as pivotal in promoting recovery and resilience. Belize can effectively navigate the post-pandemic socio-economic landscape by leveraging diverse expertise and resources. Recommendations for economic resilience and policy restructuring underscore the importance of quasi-governmental organizations like BELTRAIDE and NGOs like Ya’axché Conservation Trust. These organizations are essential to promoting economic diversity and overall household resilience. Moreover, the thesis emphasizes addressing mental health issues, strengthening family dynamics and education, and ensuring healthcare access and food security. In conclusion, this thesis guides policymakers, stakeholders, and advocates toward sustainable socio-economic development in Belize
