Alice Munro was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013; her works are famous for her contemporary short stories on the issues of social reality: “Deep-Holes” is one of them. This short fiction is published in Too Much Happiness in 2009, centering around the theme of gender discrepancy in the twenty-first century. Munro does a remarkable job of delineating the female protagonist Sally’s roles as a wife and a mother in a patriarchal society. However, although the importance of short fiction has been noticed by people, the field of short story has not been widely researched. “Deep-Holes” is a classic example: even if several scholars conduct research on the parent-child relationship in the story, none of them really discuss it from the feminist perspective. This thesis employs a feminist approach to dissecting Sally’s roles as a devalued wife to her husband Alex and a nonpowerful mother to her son Kent. |
