Other Titles: A Translation Curriculum for Developing College Students` Cross-Cultural Communication Skills

With the trends of international communication and globalization, there is a need of developing cross-cultural communication skills of college students in Taiwan through a well-designed translation curriculum. This article addresses the issue of how to develop a translation curriculum focusing on developing cross-cultural communication skills. I started with the principles of instructional design, adopting an outcome-based curriculum model proposed by Ruth Stiehl (2002 & 2005) and her colleagues. Then I addressed the need of having college students take translation courses for developing cross-cultural communication skills. Based on Stiehl’s curriculum model and issues of cross-cultural communication, I developed a framework of translation curriculum for college students, proposing the procedure of cultivating students’ basic English abilities during their freshman and sophomore years and then introducing translation courses during their senior years. I conducted an informal pilot study to test the feasibility of such translation curriculum and found it worth conducting more future studies to substantialize the curriculum. At the end, I discussed other issues relevant to supporting a translation curriculum for college students.
