The OPAC(Online Public Access Catalog) was developed at the end of 1970s as a part of the online information retrieval system. Through the application of information retrieval technology it has changed the approaches to library collections from the card catalogs in the past to the current online retrieval system with the advantages of simultaneous utilization of the said catalog by more than one library patrons and easier and quicker access to the required information by readers with amore available access points. In the past two decades many researchers have been much concerned with related OPAC technological problems such as: the combined use of up-to-date information retrieval technologies to help improve the functions of subject retrieval; the development of more intimate utilization to better the mutual responses between the technicians and library readers; and the increase of the applicability and flexibility of the said system, moreover, emphasis should be laid on the study of readers` use of the system and their opinions on the system efficiency for the results of the said study can be used not only as the guidelines for the OPAC evaluation but also as useful references for the improvement of the design of the OPAC functions. This paper is written with an attempt to understand the OPAC evaluation research trends and the analyses of the research methods from the available research papers on OPAC in the past years with a view to further comprehending whether the said OPAC should be adopted or abolished, how many methods there are for the improvement of the system, and what will be its research trends in the future.
