Though critics have generally noticed that in The Bluest Eye, "the blue eye" stands for a metaphor for the white cultural domination, and that the black characters exposed to such a cultural hegemony are twisted and diminished, yet few of them further explore the overflowing issues concerning eyes, vision, icon, media, and the various seeing/seen relationships with specific functioning mechanisms. Therefore, I decide to pursue the sundry power functions within these seeing/seen relationships (gaze/gazed impacts), on the ground of Foucault`s discourse of power.
The thesis is divided into five chapters. In the First Chapter, I bring about my classifications of the gaze according to the different gazing agents (a human act of gaze, or an icon featuring in the media to gaze back), and the strategies of gaze, i.e., Foucault`s idea of the panoptic prison is actually a giant gazing machine with meticulous control system. The gaze is categorized into four sections: the gaze of the "Truth," the panoptic gaze, the male gaze, and the female gaze back. In the Second Chapter, I employ the gaze of the "truth" to discuss about how the white culture infuses and dwarfs the blacks in the novel, propelling them into becoming the parasites to the white cultural hegemony. In Chapter Three, I argue that the elementary school, hospital, movie theater, and the white hostess`s household are places functioning as a panoptic prison. Since the black characters suffer severe changes similar to those of the prisoners in a panoptic prison intended for surveillance and rehabilitation. The Fourth Chapter is on female gaze. In a patriarchal society, the rights of looking and gazing are usually reserved for the male, while a decent woman is usually admonished of casting her eyes downwards for modesty. Only those women exercising their skills of looking and gazing, to see what appeals to them are more likely to establish a wholesome self. In Chapter Five, I analyze that the privileged male gaze still remains recalcitrant despite of the sparse female gaze back. Like a haunting evil, the male gaze lingers to devour the female body and soul.
