The secessionist movement in southern Philippines has lasted for a long time and become the most serious ethnic conflict in the country. In addition to ethnic diversity, the secessionist movement has coincided with a religious faultline. Furthermore, due to the intervention of foreign powers, this ethnic conflict was enlarged to a war of civilizations. This paper, inspired by Samuel Huntington`s insight on civilization, explores the factors behind the clash of civilizations in the Philippines as well as the relationship between foreign involvement and the secessionist movement in southern Philippines.
