This thesis explores four kinds of reduplicated words in Taiwan Min (i.e. verbs, quadrisyllablic partial reduplicated words, disyllabic adjectives and onomatopoetic words) within the framework ofprosodic morphology proposed by McCarthy and Prince (1990, 1993). The reduplication process used only in resultative and coordinate compound verbs is thoroughly investigated. This investigation shows that an iambic foot compound verb will copy its stressed final syllable as a reduplicant and a suffix, while a trochaic foot word will copy its stressed first syllable as a reduplicant and a prefix. This argumentative reduplication can be clearly accounted for by optimality theory.
