As the rapid development of information technology, the digital reading has revolutionized learners’ reading habits while more and more digital-based texts replace paper-based texts for reading learning. Obviously, the digital reading has become a development trend in the digital age. Therefore, how to develop an effective digital reading system which provides intelligent mechanisms for promoting reading performance is becoming an essential research issue. Many past studies indicated that annotated digital material provides useful knowledge to readers. The values to those annotating and subsequent readers are the acquisition of in-depth knowledge and efficient reading. More importantly, annotated information from different readers has very high potential for the discovery of value-added knowledge utilizing data mining techniques. Thus, this project intends to develop a cooperative reading annotation system, which can annotate any web page with HTML format, for archiving, accumulating and sharing the knowledge of readers who participate in reading learning processes based on Web 2.0 and cloud computing technologies. The annotated content helps new readers understand articles and helps readers who have read an article obtain a deeper and broader understanding than when reading digital content without annotations. Additionally, this project will also develop the intelligent mechanisms including mining the common consensus of reading annotation, reading annotation recommendation, and reading anxiety forecasting for determining the useful reading assisted strategies based on data mining technologies. Finally, this project will also run a reading community based on the developed cooperative reading annotation platform with the support of intelligent reading assisted mechanisms. Meanwhile, the performance of the proposed cooperative reading annotation system in terms of promoting reading skills, reading comprehension, and reducing reading anxiety will be assessed in this project.
