Multi-touch technology has been adopted widely in mobile devices. These user interfaces mainly support index finger and multiple fingers to interact with the UI elements. However, people prefer to use one-handed input in many situations. In 2012, mobile devices come in a wide range of screen sizes. For example, an iPod Nano has a 1.5-inch multi-touch screen and Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone has a 5.3-inch screen. Devices with larger touch screens have more areas that are difficult to reach by thumb in one-handed use. To reach these areas, users need to change how they grip the device, which makes the device less stable and may also feel less comfortable. We called this problem a “Reach problem”. Furthermore, the thumb cannot perform multi-finger gestures such as Zoom in/out and Rotate, some researchers tried to develop thumb-based gestures or use build-in sensors to enhance the single-handed input modality. In this project, we plan to investigate single-handed input methods on 4”~5.3” mobile phones or tablets. We will combine thumb-based and sensor-based approaches to develop several potential interactions. The research topics include: (1) “Fast Reach”: a technique to accommodate quick access for screen targets relatively distant from the thumb’s interactive space. (2) “Fast Zoom/Rotate” extends Fast Reach to provide one-handed zoom and rotate by adding pressure sensors on the edge of mobile phones. The input techniques can support wide range of phone sizes and overcome the problems of one-handed use.
