Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000) is considered one of Spain’s most prolific women writers since the Civil War. Her literary production deeply portrays the life dilemma, especially in the aspect of women’s changing roles, and has been highly acclaimed by critics in Europe and U.S. Based on textual analysis, the present project will be centered on the study of the role of the mother and women’s self development, the mother/daughter relationship, cityscape/spatial images, urban space and the role of the flâneuse, the crisis of women’s identity and the construction of female subjectivity. The project aims to explore motherhood, female identity and urban space as central themes to study the novels of the 1990s by Carmen Martín Gaite, and it expands the research of literature and cultural studies, constructively investigates the writing style of our writer’s works. This project will be conducted in two years. In the first year, Caperucita en Manhattan (1990) and Nubosidad variable (1992) will be analyzed. I will focus on how the urban space can provoke female characters’ imaginative power and their anxiety for liberation, subvert the notion of domestic and enclosed spaces for women, and reflect upon the existential values. I will study how the diverse roles of mothers inspire or influence female characters’ childhood development in order to represent the discourses of female solidarity and women’s self realization. In the second year, I will analyze and compare how the female characters in Lo raro es vivir (1996) and Irse de casa (1998) seek the balance of private/enclosed and public/open spaces, in order to recognize the significance of maternity, to embrace motherhood. Furthermore, I will study how Martín Gaite portrays the flâneuse, who, in the process of urban flânerie, attempts to demonstrate the ways in which the city space affects self awareness and represents the multiple roles played by women. |
