Over time feminist literary critics have chronicled the construction of gender and space in order to challenge the widespread idea of gender binarism, and they have examined the complex relationship between female characters and space in works. Along with the history, the concept of gender binarism has been persisted in Spanish literary and cultural traditions. The masculine has been imagined as temporal dynamism and the feminine has been conceived as space; man always moves freely through space while woman is confined within it. Based on textual analysis, the present project will be centered on the study of spatial images in texts, spatial categories (topographical space, spiritual space, physical space) and characteristics, female characters, the connection between space (city/country) and the female body, the discourse of power, the crisis of women’s self identity and the construction of female subjectivity. The project aims to explore gender and space as central themes to study the texts by four popular women writers of contemporary Spain, and it expands the research of literature and cultural studies, constructively investigates the writing style of Spanish women’s novels. This will also enrich the research achievement on Spanish literary criticism. This project will be conducted in three years. In the first year, La plaza del Diamante (1962) and La calle de las Camelias (1966), two masterpieces by Mercė Rodoreda, will be analyzed. I will study how Rodoreda used the contrasting spatial images to represent the construction of female subjectivity. In the second year, Entre visillos (1958) and El cuarto de atrás (1978) by Carmen Martín Gaite will be studied. I will explore how space reveals the connection between confinement, escape and the growth of female consciousness. In the third year, Las edades de Lulú (1989) by Almudena Grandes and Beatriz y los cuerpos celestes (1998) by Lucía Extebarria will be examined. I will study how these two writers explore the female body (intimate space) in the name of sex/sexuality, and how the consuming cultural space in the modern metropolis causes female characters’ loneliness, alienation and self exile. |
