    Abstract: 荀子對於「學」極為重視,亦明確論述「學之數」與「學之義」的終始步驟,也就是學的方法與目的。荀子認為學的方法是「始乎誦經,終於讀經」,而其目的則為「始乎為士,終於為聖人」。基本上兩者是相應的,否則方法與目的即斷為兩截而無意義。然而誦經與讀理不必然就能夠達到為士、成聖的目的,還須要有其他的修養功夫配合,方能達至。也就是說,荀子所謂的為學步驟的終始對應關係,是做為為學進路的提點,其中有著更深層的內涵與意義,不可執著於「學數有終」而認為學是可以有終止的,其所謂「學不可以已」才是成聖關鍵所在。
