    Abstract: 荀子對於「學」極為重視，亦明確論述「學之數」與「學之義」的終始步驟，也就是學的方法與目的。荀子認為學的方法是「始乎誦經，終於讀經」，而其目的則為「始乎為士，終於為聖人」。基本上兩者是相應的，否則方法與目的即斷為兩截而無意義。然而誦經與讀理不必然就能夠達到為士、成聖的目的，還須要有其他的修養功夫配合，方能達至。也就是說，荀子所謂的為學步驟的終始對應關係，是做為為學進路的提點，其中有著更深層的內涵與意義，不可執著於「學數有終」而認為學是可以有終止的，其所謂「學不可以已」才是成聖關鍵所在。
