The Islamic philosophy of mind inherited the Platonic and Aristotelian traditions of body-mind dualism and the immortality of the soul in Late Antique and reconstructed them within the theological framework of the Islamic doctrine of Tawhid. So it departed from the Hellenic traditions and also made a distinction with other Asian ones. The Central Asian philosopher and physician Ibn Sina (or Avicenna, 980-1037) was the first towering figure who made a creative synthesis of the Hebrew monotheism and the Greek dualistic metaphysics. Ibn Sina’s works cover a wide range of subjects, such as natural philosophy, medicine, ethics, logic and metaphysics, so that he has been regarded as the second encyclopedic master after Aristotle in the history of philosophy. My three-year project based upon his two masterpieces, Qanun al-Tibb (The Canon of Medicine) and Kitab al-Shifa’ (The Book of the Healing), and other relevant original works attempts to make a critical and creative interpretation of his integral theory of body, mind and spirit and explore its metaphysical foundation. In the first year, I trace the intellectual lineages of Ibn Sina’s integral theory along the two streams of the classical Greek body-mind dualism and the Islamic dialectic theology (Kalam). The latter was brought by Ibn Sina to resolve the problem derived from the ambiguous arguments regarding the nature of the soul by Aristotle. I also elaborate Ibn Sina’s critique on the Muslim theologians’ refutations of natural causation in favor of God’s creation through free will. In the second year, I investigate the relationship between Ibn Sina’s philosophy of mind on the one hand and his medical science, ethics, Islamic law and soteriology on the other hand. In the last year, I conclude my critical interpretation on the basis of my inter-disciplinary dialogues with my teammates in the areas of the modern philosophy of mind, neuroscience and jurisprudence in the previous two years. I try to shed new light on the crucial issues of body-mind relationship debated in modern sciences in terms of the Islamic viewpoint. |
