Abstract: Given the division of labor inherent to modern society, it is inevitable that some people end up doing society`s "dirty work." However, little research has been done to enhance our understanding of such occupational contexts. This study aims to explore how individuals working at jobs with negative or dirty associations may achieve positive psychological outcomes by joining a community. Data are collected over three time periods from 107 cabbies in Taipei; the cabbies are all affiliated with the city`s largest taxi fleet, which makes use of the Global Positioning System dispatching technology. The study helps build our understanding of the relationship between the sense of belonging to a community and the resulting positive psychological outcomes (i.e., trust on the part of individuals for the management team of the community, job satisfaction, and confidence belief in technology use). In addition, we also investigate the moderating role of technology use. The results show that the sense of belonging to a community has positive effects on trust and job satisfaction. The moderating effects exist that technology moderates the relationship between the sense of belonging to a community and trust, job satisfaction, as well as confident belief in technology use.
