Abstract: This paper presents an efficient and reliable forwarding scheme for vehicular ad hoc networks called Geographical Forwarding Scheme with Location Verification. The proposed scheme first defines the area where candidate vehicle should be selected. Link duration estimation and link-quality assessment is performed to determine which candidate vehicle reside within the defined area is the most stable and efficient. By measuring the current state of each candidate, vehicle with unreliable links can be eliminated and the most stable connection can be established. Then location verification mechanism is conducted to ensure the correctness of the location of the selected candidate vehicle. This is important because the use of accurate location information has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency of the forwarding scheme. By utilizing both techniques, we are able to ensure the selected next forwarder have the ability to provide the most stable connection to maintain high degree of associatively with the sender node to provide efficient and reliable delivery of data to the destination. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves a higher delivery ratio and lower end-to-end delay. © 2013 IEEE.
