Geographic database usually consists of various types of data that have different data format, coordinate system, data quality, and objectives for data production. For some geographic data items, the definition may not be the same. For data integration and data sharing, conversion of data having different format is an important issue. In this study, the protection forest base maps, parcel maps, topographic maps, control points maps, administrative boundary maps, forest inventory maps, and related tabular data were integrated to establish a geographic information system for the protection forests in Taipei City. Data conversion was performed on these data, and valuable spatial information may be provided by the system to facilitate protection forest management and decision making. For converting the parcel maps, the attribute data of the parcels can not be retrieved directly by using the Microstation software such that more time were needed to process the data. In comparison, using the ARC/INFO software to convert the parcel maps can provide spatial information as well as attribute data, therefore is a more efficient manner. For topographic mps conversion, due to the attributes of the topographic features and their spatial relationships were not properly described in the original maps, usage of these maps are limited to data display for GIS applications. In addition, some data layers were misplaced within the topographic maps, which caused more works for data conversion and editing. The aforementioned problems were all resolved in this study.
