The Manipulation of Literature, Studies in Literary Translation中,長達9頁的前言:“Translation Studies and New Paradigm”。
Theo Herman is one of the scholars of the school of descriptive translation approach. "Translation Studies and New Paradigm", the nine-page preface of The Manipulation of Literature: Studies in Literary Translation, published in 1985, is his most well-known article. Not only the Manipulation School was named after this article, but also many traditional deviations of translation were clarified, that has drawn the translation discipline to the right track. The thesis will first introduce the historical background of the Manipulation School and describe in detail how translation was marginalized, excluded from or attached to other disciplines in accordance with Hermans` viewpoint. The second part will discuss the relationship between translation and norms: this part will recount the definitions of translation and norms, explore their relationship, and finally discuss Hermans’ views about the correct translation approach. There are three key points in conclusion: 1. the maturity of the translation discipline; 2. the re-recognition to the "norm" 3. the research approach that integrates the historical background of the text and the text itself.
