Liberalism constitutes a significant part in contemporary International Relations (IR) theory. However, as an umbrella term, there are various strands within this camp of the so-called liberalism. This research aims to explore and introduce the content as well as core assumptions of liberalism in IR theory to Taiwan’s academia. To achieve this goal of introducing liberalism to the academia in Taiwan, this research will concentrate on contemporary issues explored by the liberal theorists in the western academia. In addition, this research will explore the possibility to bridge these various strands in the liberal camp for Taiwan’s academia, as certain Taiwanese scholars did for constructivism recently. Therefore, issues regarding democracy, international organization, and trade, and how they affect state behavior are central to this research. More importantly, while some scholars maintain that these factors exert causal impact on world peace, others contend that these factors may at best correlate with the lack of war among selected states. This research will scrutinize these different strands of liberalism in IR theory, and recap their common ground as a response to the criticism from classical liberalism in political philosophy. Last but not least, this study will help us generate new research agenda to explain as well as understand current affairs. Democracy promotion, global governance, and economic interdependence have trumped other issues and become the new liberal agenda in IR studies. My research will suggest these agendas help to predict the new developments in world affairs.
