Taiwan Media has faced the most severe competition since 2003, which threatens the advertising income of the newspaper industry and exacerbates sensationalism in television industry. The reasons are the emergence of cable television news channels and the Hong-Kong based Next Media Interactive Limited starting its magazine and newspaper operation in Taiwan market, the Next Magazine and the Apple Daily. Trauma news includes violence, crime, justice, and disasters. Taiwan has faced a large amount of natural and human-made disasters, such as earthquakes, typhoons, flooding, air crashes and several trauma accidents. It is inevitable to interview and report victims. Covering victims is always the Golden Rule for newsrooms in the U.S., which is also the case in Taiwan. Victims’ tears and bloods boost the rating higher; therefore, newsrooms push reporters to have more stories or scoops of victims by hook or by crook. It is necessary to provide trauma literacy and to help journalists to cover victims and trauma stories, not only to protect victims, but also to protect journalists per se from emotional problems or PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Journalism and trauma is a blend new idea for journalists in Taiwan according to my previous research. They do not have much empathy on victims, and are not aware of possible hurts on victims and journalists both. I have been working on media coverage on victims and building journalism codes for covering victims since 2004. During my researching period, Dart Center in Columbia University, US, is a very important resource for my teaching and research. Dart Center has developed several curriculums and on-job-training materials; however, the resource is built mostly in the North American settings. It is about time to establish systematic knowledge for Taiwan academic and practical realm. With this project, there will be more researchers, journalists, students or even audiences knowing this concept, and more curriculums and pedagogies developed for Journalism school (J-school) students and hands-on news professionals in Taiwan.
