In the last seven years or so we have continuously concentrated our research on the topics of “the aging” and “narrative,” and obtained useful academic experiences. In this proposal we decided to go one-step further by studying the theme of “life story” and consider it our first attempt to integrate communication and narrative, the two research traditions which had rarely been connected by any previous effort. In the following pages, therefore, we introduced three research areas that have primarily explored the meanings of “life stories” in the past decades, including narrative psychology, narrative gerontology, and life story interviews. We believe, based on the literatures that we introduced in this proposal, these three areas would all contribute to our attempt of integrating communication and narrative as a new field. To achieve the abovementioned research goals, we briefly brought up three sub-fields that may be used to apply in the following three years, such as narrative organizing, narrative marketing, and narrative writing in new media. It is hoped that, after our in-depth studies of these three sub-fields, we would be able to propose a theory of narrative communication with the concept of life stories being the core ideas.
