The advancement of information technology has brought forth fast information exchange and knowledge interaction. While many known resources have lost the power of distinguishing firm performance due to constant and intense competition, knowledge, a resource which is unfamiliar to both researchers and practitioners, emerges as a well recognized valuable resource. Since the 80』s, effective and efficient knowledge activities are believed to produce sustained competitive advantage. The diffusion and extension of knowledge rely on knowledge interaction, yet knowledge interaction is seldom the focus of knowledge management literature. This research aims to identify the knowledge interaction patterns that are effective in helping to make decisions in the process of problem solving. This research question concerns two dimensions, one being the decomposability of the problem at hand, and the other being the attainability of needed knowledge. Therefore, based on these two dimensions, at the first stage a conceptual model will be proposed, which identifies the management models corresponding to different levels of problem decomposability and knowledge attainability. Then the information for knowledge interaction will be collected separately at the second and third stages by using an experimental design and a case study. In order to define and observe highly effective knowledge interaction patterns, a series of experiments will be conducted in a setting where both the problem decomposability and the knowledge attainability are high. In such a setting, there are fewer intervening variables, thus it is easier to draw samples and extract information. Intuitively, high-intensity learning is inspired and originated from a challenging setting where either the problem decomposability or knowledge attainability is low. Observing how this type of learning is diffused and extended into other settings is of great interest. Therefore, at the third stage, this research will study if the high-intensity learning is the result of the highly-effective knowledge interaction patterns identified at the second stage. In addition, following the loci of management model transition, this research will trace how the learning is diffused and extended. Because it is more challenging in terms of problem decomposability and knowledge attainability, there will not be many business operations from which to draw samples. The scarcity of samples and the nature of research question make case study a most suitable research method to tackle the problem. The case study will first seek secondary source. If secondary source is not available or not applicable, it will launch a primary case data collection. This research is conceived under the belief of the strategic school of knowledge management. It engages in the management models, and explores the issues of strategic knowledge management from the behavioral aspect. The issue of highly effective patterns of strategic knowledge management will be addressed by this research.
