Mixed land use regains its popularity in many developed and developing countries as sustainable development becomes planning mainstream. However, a few research questions about mixed use remain incompletely answered. For one, the concept, indexes, and impacts/roles of mixed use are not completely clear, in particularly they may be different from various aspects such as housing, urban planning, transportation, economics, etc. Secondly, mixed use seems entangled with density, accessibility, and even jobs/housing balance. Finally, the selection of mixed-use variables and spatial scale of its measurement may vary from different aspects, too. Consequently, this paper aims to accomplish the following tasks: (1) to clarify the concepts, definitions, impacts or roles of mixed use from various aspects; (2) to disentangle the relationship between mixed-use, density, and accessibility; and (3) to shed lights on how to select mixed-use variables. These tasks will be conducted through literature review, accompanied by simulation analysis on mixed-use variables with Taipei as a case study. The primary data sources include land use data, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) coverage
