As information and communication technologies make progress, there are many e-journals provided by academic libraries. It also brings a lot of business opportunities to publishers, subscription agents, aggregators and e-journals management system vendors. Scholars, faculties and students are very much like e-journals because it is convenient to access full-text articles of e-journals from web. The new model of e-journals has been gradually developed. As the Drexel University Library studied e-journals, they found there were much difference between e-journals and paper journals, including information infrastructure, administration, technical services, public services, reserves, document delivery and information services. Since 2002, the Library had cancelled print journals and had changed to buy electronic journals. As electronic journals are heavily used by scientists, Peter Boyce studied on electronic journals use, they found scientists read many print journals, electronic journals, e-prints, full-text databases, and usage patterns of journals changed dramatically. In Taiwan, there were some studies on electronic journals publishing and evaluation. However, studies on electronic journals use of social scientists are seldom made. The research is a two-year project, and mainly studies on electronic journals use by social scientists from the viewpoints of scholarly communication. It has six goals as follows: A. To study scholarly electronic communication of social scientists model. B. To study the importance of electronic journals on tasks of social scientists in Taiwan. C. To study information seeking and reading of electronic journals of social scientists in Taiwan. D. To study academic writing and information needs of social scientists in Taiwan. E. To study how library collection support electronic journals usage of social scientists in Taiwan. F. To analyze and compare electronic journals usage and reading pattern of social scientists in Taiwan with those studies of scientists and of other nations.
