In this study, we examine the factors that affect people’s sense of political efficacy by employing data from the 2004 Taiwan Election and Democratization Study (TEDS 2004LA).
Following Abramson’s four possible explanations, our research indicates that the level of education (political-education explanation) and partisanship (political-reality explanation) have significant effects on people’s sense of political efficacy. We also examine the effect of media use on political efficacy, and we find that people who watch TV more frequently are more likely to have a higher level of political efficacy. Regarding those who discuss politics more frequently with their friends, such people are more likely to have a higher level of internal political efficacy but not in external political efficacy.
This research helps us to understand better how education and partisanship affect one’s political efficacy. Regarding the media as a means for receiving information, television is obviously more influential than newspapers and other forms, while research on the effect of community networks has yet to form any substantial theories.
