This study investigates the digital curation of female councilors in the Taipei City Council, focusing on how female political figures are represented within digital exhibition frameworks and how users experience these curatorial platforms. As a significant institution in Taiwan’s local political landscape, the Taipei City Council serves as a symbolic site where the political participation of women reflects the evolving societal emphasis on gender equality and public engagement. With the ongoing advancement of digital archiving and the increasing prevalence of digital curation practices, the question of how digital platforms can effectively showcase women’s contributions to political life—while simultaneously supporting educational outreach and interactive user engagement—emerges as the central concern of this research.
This study employs the Esri StoryMaps platform to construct a digital exhibition documenting the historical development of women councilors in Taipei City between 1950 and 2022. Representative political figures and their accomplishments are featured throughout the curated narrative. Two analytical models guide the evaluation process: the Honeycomb Model of User Experience and the Feminist Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) framework. The study adopts a mixed-methods research design. The quantitative component involves a structured questionnaire survey administered to university students across Taiwan, resulting in 190 valid responses concerning user experiences with the curated content. The qualitative component consists of semi-structured interviews that explore participants’ perceptions of the curatorial content, interaction design, and the interpretation of gender-related issues. Quantitative data are analyzed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Pearson correlation, while qualitative data are examined through thematic analysis to synthesize participant insights and experiential reflections.
The findings reveal that users generally held a positive evaluation of the digital curation experience. Among the seven dimensions of user experience, the highest ratings were given to usefulness and accessibility, suggesting that the content provided educational value and was easily accessible across devices. However, desirability received relatively lower ratings, indicating potential areas for improvement in terms of visual appeal and interactive design. From the perspective of feminist HCI, the curation performed well in dimensions of diversity and advocacy, contributing to a deeper understanding of the varied experiences and public contributions of women councilors. Nevertheless, lower performance was observed in the areas of participation and self-disclosure, highlighting the need for more opportunities for user involvement and personal expression.
Based on the integration of findings from both analytical models, the study concludes that digital curation should emphasize both usability and interpretive depth. Enhancing interactive feedback mechanisms and linking curated content with broader social issues are essential strategies for advancing gender education and civic engagement. In sum, this research proposes an evaluative framework for digital curation that integrates cultural context with practical application. It also provides a useful reference for the digital representation of women’s political histories and the promotion of public culture. Future research directions include expanding the database of female councilors, refining interactive design elements, and incorporating educational outreach and community participation in order to increase the visibility and long-term sustainability of diverse gender perspectives in the digital cultural landscape.
