This study aimed to develop the Taiwan Microaggression Scale for Homosexual Individuals to explore the forms and meanings of microaggressions experienced by homosexual individuals within Taiwan’s local sociocultural context and to evaluate the scale’s reliability and validity. A mixed-methods design was employed. First, based on a literature review, the researcher designed a semi-structured interview guide and conducted in-depth interviews with five homosexual individuals in Taiwan of diverse gender identities, ages, and regional backgrounds, selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Narratives from these interviews served as the initial pool of items for the scale. Subsequently, the self-developed scale was administered to adult homosexual individuals in Taiwan, with a pilot sample of 100 participants and a formal sample of 353 participants. Data were analyzed using AMOS 25.0, applying exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), descriptive statistics, and other statistical methods. The findings indicated that microaggressions experienced by homosexual individuals in Taiwan comprised four dimensions: (1) anti-homosexual experiences and attitudes, (2) denial of homosexuality, (3) social disapproval, and (4) family pressure. The finalized Taiwan Microaggression Scale for Homosexual Individuals contains 23 items across these four subscales: anti-homosexual experiences and attitudes (4 items), denial of homosexuality (6 items), social disapproval (8 items), and family pressure (5 items). Reliability analysis revealed high internal consistency, with an overall Cronbach’s α of 0.954 and subscale α values ranging from 0.829 to 0.919, exceeding the 0.70 benchmark. Content validity was established through literature review, in-depth interviews, and expert consultation, ensuring comprehensive coverage of microaggression contexts relevant to homosexual individuals in Taiwan. Construct validity was supported by EFA and CFA, with all fit indices meeting acceptable academic standards. Analysis of demographic variables showed significant differences in microaggression experiences: (a) transgender respondents scored significantly higher than cisgender respondents on most dimensions, indicating multiple pressures arising from intersecting gender identities; (b) younger participants scored significantly higher than older participants on the hypersexualization and family pressure dimensions. |
