This thesis examines Taiwanese young people’s narratives of the 2019-2020 Anti-Extradition Law Bill (Anti-ELAB, hereafter) protests in Hong Kong, considering why Taiwanese became so invested in a foreign protest movement, and how such support reflects their views of China. It then questions participants’ narratives on Hong Kong immigration to Taiwan since the protests, which is the primary way the Anti-ELAB movement continues to have effects on Taiwan to this day. Participants in this study are Taiwanese who turned 18 in or later than 1996, the year of the first direct presidential election in Taiwan. The study uses qualitative interviews and thematic analysis to evaluate participants’ views. Results from this analysis suggest that, while very supportive of the Anti-ELAB protests, interviewees generally oppose specialized immigration pathways for Hongkongers to come to Taiwan, and in some cases advocate for tightening restrictions on Hongkongers, especially as Hong Kong grows closer to China. Drawing on securitization and deep securitization theories to better understand the public’s role in viewing policy issues through a national security lens, this thesis explains that these two viewpoints, namely people’s support for Hong Kong’s protest their rejection of immigration pathways for Hongkongers, are not in conflict, but consistent, as both reflect participants’ priority: to a protect a Taiwanese future that is separate from China. To further understand the role of deep securitization in shaping these views, the study also includes a comparison of Presidents’ Tsai Ing-wen’s and Lai Ching-te’s about these Hong Kong issues with that of interviewees.
