Considering media representation theory together with affordance theory and the notion of media democratization, this thesis addresses the role of social media, with a focus on YouTube, in shaping Taiwanese indigenous children’s cultural understanding and identity. By using qualitative methods, including interview and thematic analysis, this research reveals that indigenous children tend to engage with indigenous content on YouTube incidentally and passively. Their engagement is often dependent on existing social circles and YouTube algorithms. In addition, based upon their personal experiences and YouTube viewing habits, indigenous children have different interpretations of their cultures and communities. Some are more likely to agree with popular, if not stereotypical, representations of indigenous culture on YouTube, whereas others oppose such representations.
This thesis reveals that YouTube does not play a deterministic role in the making of cultural identity. It shows how research participants disagreed with the platform’s reporting mechanisms and expressed concern about indigenous cultural content being categorized as inappropriate by the platform. Discussions as such highlight YouTube’s affordance – algorithms – which is driven by commercial interests and user engagement. This thesis demonstrates that under certain circumstances YouTube can increase the visibility of and the accessibility to indigenous content, hence democratizing the cultural sphere to some extent. However, the platform is more likely to promote dominant cultures and hegemonic identities. In this respect, YouTube does not empower minorities, but enhances hegemonic cultures, posing a threat to democratic engagement.
This thesis has brought to the fore the complexity of the ways in which children from minorities engaged with YouTube, calling attention to the platform’s role in facilitating or hindering indigenous cultural understanding. It sheds light on YouTube’s exercise of representational power in the cultural realm and its failings in democratizing information about indigenous minorities. This thesis has also discussed how the platform transfers the responsibility for undermining inclusivity to its users.
