Title:	Phantom of Liberal Democracy? The Relationship Between Populist Voting and National Economic Liberalization: Cases from Asia

Abstract:	This study addresses inconsistent findings in previous research on the voting behavior of voters with populist attitudes—some suggest they vote for populist parties or candidates, while others do not. By introducing a country's economic conditions as a key mediating variable, this study theorize that the degree of economic liberalization influences populist voters' behavior. Analyzing samples from Asian countries, this study find that higher economic liberalization correlates with stronger populist attitudes among voters, aligning with the "losers of globalization" theory. However, populist attitudes themselves negatively impact the likelihood of voting populist; economic liberalization alone doesn't significantly affect this probability but interacts with voters' populist attitudes—when both economic liberalization is high and populist attitudes are significant, voters are more likely to vote for populist parties. Economic liberalization reforms have impacted the economic status and stability of a minority, creating globalization's losers and fostering fears even among vested interests, thereby contributing to populist attitudes.
