In Lady Windermere’s Fan, Oscar Wilde satirizes the hypocrisy of moral values, societal norms, and the rigid ideals toward women during Victorian England. Upper-class women in this period are often framed with the restrictive ideal of a lady, as they are strictly required to adhere to etiquette and demeanor. However, the play focuses on the varied attitudes of upper-class women towards these social norms and how they develop their own strategies to navigate a society that is relatively unfavorable to the development of women’s social consciousness. Lady Windermere and Mrs. Erlynne discover that everyone in the upper-class London social circle is concerned with manners and how others perceive them, making their social circle akin to a stage where everyone continuously performs their roles. This idea strongly resonates with Judith Butler’s theory of gender performance, which suggests that human behaviors are deeply influenced by society and culture.
This study is inspired by Butler’s theory and the contrast between traditional and innovative women challenging tradition presented in Lady Windermere’s Fan. The first chapter summarizes the moral conduct requirements for women in Victorian British society and modern scholars’ views on Lady Windermere’s Fan. The second chapter explores how gender performance enables Lady Windermere and Mrs. Erlynne to gain agency in a society with stringent moral standards that restrict women’s self-awareness and behavior, ensuring their own interests and elevating their status. Finally, the third chapter aims to discuss how the two women use gender role- playing to break free from social and familial constraints, pursuing substantive ladyship beyond just titles.
