This thesis examines how the China studies field in Taiwan is responding to the significant challenges now facing China research globally. In recent years, China has become increasingly difficult to study due to tightened political controls, restrictions on data and fieldwork access, and shrinking space for academic exchange. This changing environment constitutes a paradigm shift in the field of China studies, reshaping both the methods and the research agenda used to understand China. Drawing on qualitative interviews and focus group discussions with twenty-seven Taiwanese scholars, this thesis analyzes how Taiwan’s China research community is adapting to this new period. To situate Taiwan’s China studies field, this thesis examines its historical development and the current ecosystem of research institutions, offering a primer on the context in which Taiwan’s scholarly community approaches China research. Highlighting the unique challenges and strengths of Taiwan’s China studies—as well as areas of commonality with broader international field—demonstrates that Taiwan’s field is evolving both in terms of methods and research agenda, featuring more digital and data-driven methods that examine China from a distance, and a shift in focus towards China’s global profile and impact in Taiwan. Ultimately, this thesis argues that Taiwan’s China studies community offers valuable lessons for the global field as it navigates a more restrictive and politically charged research environment. |
