In recent years, advancements in technology and the rise of the digital era—particularly the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI)—have significantly transformed everyday life. At the same time, they have also reshaped the methodologies and tools adopted by scholars in their research processes, making research more convenient and efficient, and fostering the growth of interdisciplinary studies. In the realm of education, innovative teaching methods such as AI teaching assistants and role-based dialogue systems have been introduced. The influence of AI on both teaching and research has extended into the field of history. However, due to the ways AI systems retrieve data and the ethical concerns underpinning them, tensions have emerged when juxtaposed with the historical discipline’s emphasis on authenticity, objectivity, and rigor. Consequently, the integration of AI in historical scholarship has elicited both supportive and critical perspectives.
This study collects and analyzes textual data related to this topic from online platforms and communities focused on history, and conducts interviews with historians and history educators who have incorporated AI tools into their research and teaching. The goal is to understand domestic perspectives on the application of AI in historical teaching and research, to identify frequently discussed themes and emotional tendencies in public discourse, and to examine both the advantages and limitations of AI in these contexts. Based on these findings, the study offers recommendations for the application of AI in historical teaching and research as a reference for future development.
The results show that on social media, commonly discussed topics regarding the application of AI in historical teaching and research include: “Historians’ responses to AI,” “Interdisciplinary applications of AI,” “The intersection of historical practice and digital transformation,” “The impact of AI on historical research,” “Technological innovation in history education,” and “The development of digital humanities tools and data platforms.” Sentiment analysis indicates an overall “highly positive” attitude toward these topics in online discourse. However, a comparison with interview findings reveals a noticeable discrepancy between public sentiment and practical experiences. Interview results suggest that AI tools in the domestic context are primarily used in the preparatory stages of historical research and teaching. While these tools enhance efficiency, they also present limitations and challenges that bring about significant shifts in historical education and the academic environment.
Based on textual and interview analyses, this study makes the following recommendations: Historians and history educators should adapt their teaching and research strategies in response to changes in the academic environment, and continue to cultivate creativity and critical insight. Institutions responsible for the preservation of historical documents should accelerate the digitization of records to enhance the applicability of AI tools. Academic communities should establish ethical guidelines for the use of AI and collaborate with computer science experts to develop AI tools that better align with the needs of historical research. Finally, government agencies should provide appropriate training and resources to reduce the urban-rural divide, and develop relevant policies and standards to guide the integration of AI into history education.
