This study aims to explore the experiences of gay men who acquiesce to open relationships, focusing on the experience of being proposed an open relationship by a partner, the emotions and psychological adjustments during the process of acquiescence, and the reflections following the termination of the open or intimate relationships. In order to uncover the nuanced and culturally embedded experiences of gay men in acquiescing to open relationships, this study adopts a narrative inquiry approach to present each participant's unique life story and the contextual formation of their feelings and thoughts within intimate relationships.

Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews and analyzed using the "holistic–content" method proposed by Lieblich et al. (1998). Participants consisted of three gay men who had previously acquiesced to an open relationship proposed by their partners and had since ended those intimate relationships.

The findings revealed that, after being proposed an open relationship by their partners, participants’ experiences of acquiescence included: (1) sexual dissatisfaction as a key motivation for entering an open relationship; (2) respecting but being unwilling to engage in open relationships; (3) acquiescence influenced by low self-esteem, power imbalance, and pragmatic considerations; (4) gradual decline in sexual frequency or willingness; (5) differences in the timing of acquiescence; and (6) the internet as a key medium for meeting partners and facilitating sexual encounters. Emotions and psychological adjustment during the process included: (1) ambivalence and relief within acquiescence; (2) insecurity in one-sided open relationships; (3) acquiescence and rule negotiation as problem-focused coping; (4) lack of support for discussing open relationships; (5) difficulty expressing oneself to a partner; (6) emotion-focused coping centered on the individual; and (7) making situational attributions of relationship problems. Reflections after the end of the relationship included: (1) reflections on power inequality and future willingness to engage in open relationships; and (2) renewed understanding of personal needs and relationship patterns, as well as future outlooks.

Based on the findings and conclusions, this study offers considerations and recommendations for practitioners and future research directions.
