This project aims to investigate the relationship between international competition, product quality, and labor market outcomes. Specifically, I will ask the following two questions: (a) Does an industry with a longer quality ladder shields its workers from international competition, and (b) in face of competition, how does an industry’s proximity to frontier in the world affects its workers’ labor market outcomes, such as wages? To study these issues, I will merge a worker-level dataset, Taiwanese Manpower Utilization Survey (人力運用調查), with trade data to conduct my analyses. My project adds on the existing literature from two important fronts. First, I explicitly consider the role play by product quality, and second, my measurement of international competition builds upon Eaton and Kortum (2002) multisectoral model of trade and will consider competitions Taiwanese firms face in every export markets. Consider product quality may be an important venue as one could imagine that the “vertical” attribute of an industry may affects its possibility to escape competition. Furthermore, studies on competition effects suggest that while “good” firms compete more fiercely when challenges arise, “bad” firms quit when adversity approaches. Hence, knowing what products Taiwanese firms produce and how they perform in terms of quality from a global perspective might be important for analyzing the trade effects on labor. Using a new measurement of international competition is also important as a large portion of competitions Taiwanese industries face are in foreign markets. Furthermore, this measure can be readily modified to account for the effect of a particular competitor (e.g. China) on Taiwanese workers. Hence, this broaden the dimensions for my study. Finally, I propose several extensions. For example, I will follow Ebenstein et al. (2013) and consider the economy-wide labor market effect of trade competitions. I will also consider the possible differential effect brought about by imported intermediate and final goods. Additionally, different datasets that might be useful for confirmation of the results are also suggested.
