摘要: Chapter 3 examines the language contact situation in Taiwan and its impact on Taiwan Mandarin, particularly through the incorporation of loanwords. Influenced by historical, social, and cultural factors, Taiwan’s linguistic landscape includes Mandarin Chinese as the official language, with influences from Southern Min, Hakka, indigenous languages, and foreign languages like English, Japanese, and other European languages. This diversity has led to a rich vocabulary in Taiwan Mandarin, enhanced by borrowed words. The chapter underscores the significance of integrating loanwords into Chinese vocabulary teaching. By introducing these words, educators can help learners broaden their vocabulary and gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and social contexts in which these terms are used. This approach aims to develop a more comprehensive and practical command of the language for learners. Section 3.1 provides an overview of loanword theories; Section 3.2 discusses the language contact situation in Taiwan; Section 3.3 presents the historical background of loanword borrowing in Taiwan Mandarin; Section 3.4 analyzes the specific loanwords in Taiwan Mandarin; and Section 3.5 offers implications for teaching Chinese vocabulary. The chapter suggests that incorporating loanwords into language instruction can enhance learners’ linguistic repertoire and cultural awareness, facilitating a more holistic language learning experience.
