News consumption is considered a crucial indicator of public awareness, making the high news avoidance rates among younger generations concerning. This study examines how Generation Z audiences with "news-finds-me" perceptions develop diverse tactics in algorithm-driven social media environments. Through semi-structured interviews with 16 participants, and analyzed using Michel de Certeau's theory of everyday practices and communicative affordance concepts, the research identifies two news repertoires: Mainstream-Peripheral News Integration Audience, and Interest-driven News Encounterer. The study also categorizes two tactical practices: Active-seeking tactics (cross-platform practices, algorithm training, deliberate news sourcing tactics), and News avoidance tactics (silent resistance and active avoidance, tactical refuge, leveraging functions to reduce news exposure). Findings reveal audiences are not passive recipients of algorithmic recommendations but demonstrate significant agency in developing complex tactical practices influenced by affordance perception, algorithmic awareness, their content interference experiences, and personal information management styles. Among these, audiences' "algorithmic literacy awareness" is closely related to their ability to perceive platform affordances and adopt tactics. This study reflects on the inadequacies of both "news avoidance" and "incidental news exposure" theories, providing a theoretical foundation for Generation Z audiences' subjectivity and creative practices in algorithmic media environments. |
