Investigating the relationship between self-esteem and depression, most of previous focused on single facet of self-esteem. The present study aims at simultaneously examining the relationship between multiple facets of self-esteem (i.e., explicit self-esteem, instability of explicit self-esteem, implicit self-esteem) and depression in college students and patients with depression. Secondly, previous studies haven’t considered the dynamic change in self-esteem and depression over time. The present study plans to elaborate the influence of dynamic change in explicit self-esteem on depression by repeated measurement and advanced statistics. Thirdly, the present study plans to examine the process behind IAT through estimating the parameters in quad model (Conrey et al., 2005) by Bayesian inference. By doing so, the present study may be able to find out which process behind implicit self-esteem affects depression the most, and their interaction effect with explicit self-esteem and stress. Finally, the present study aims at examining whether the three questions mentioned above show different patterns in currently depressed, formerly depressed and never depressed individuals. The present study plans to recruit 200 college students, 200 patients with diagnosed depression, and 200 never depressed individual from community, and complete the whole study within 3 years.
