AI chatbots, particularly ChatGPT, are revolutionizing education, with significant implications for digital media studies. ChatGPT is known for enhancing creativity and productivity, acting as a study partner for content creation, brainstorming, writing support, problem-solving, feedback, and research. This study explores its integration and impact across undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. levels, examining differences in application, effectiveness, and reliance.
Through qualitative semi-structured interviews, the research investigates how ChatGPT boosts creativity, streamlines workflows, and addresses media-related tasks, while revealing differences in reliance, opportunities, and challenges across academic levels. Findings show that undergraduates primarily use ChatGPT for productivity tasks, such as report preparation, precise information retrieval, and study support, while reserving creative tasks for independent effort to maintain originality. Master’s students not only for productivity but also for creativity, frequently employing it for idea generation, thesis writing, and multimedia projects, though concerns about over-reliance and diminished originality persist. Ph.D. students employed ChatGPT for high-level research, including brainstorming, literature reviews, data analysis, and conference preparations. They value its efficiency and speed, considering it an indispensable tool for conducting comprehensive research that they cannot do without.
The study concludes that as academic challenges grow, ChatGPT transitions from a helpful tool for saving time to a powerful academic resource. While it boosts productivity and enhances academic quality, it also prompts important discussions about its effect on creativity and critical thinking. The findings deepen our
understanding of how ChatGPT is integrated at different academic levels, underscoring its potential to transform media education. This research provides valuable insights for educators to better understand how students engage with AI technology, considering both its advantages and challenges. It enables educators to adjust their teaching approaches accordingly and guide students in using AI tools in a meaningful, effective, responsible, and ethical manner. Additionally, it paves the way for future research on the development of AI chatbots to enhance their effectiveness and better align with educational practices.
