Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot (1952) has been long considered the representative work of the Theatre of the Absurd movement. In this play, Beckett presents a minimalist world that repeats the same plot twice, often interpreted as a cryptic or nonsensical narrative. However, despite its originality, Waiting for Godot has perplexed critics, who have sought to conduct a thorough examination to unravel its interpretation of the absurdity of human life. However, this thesis endeavors to surpass previous research by delving into the psychological intricacies of each character, revealing their pain, suffering, and madness. Through a detailed analysis of the characters’ seemingly irrational words and actions, as well as their relationships and interactions, this study aims to explore how the lack of ethical care leads each individual into a state of suffering and madness. I argue that in Waiting for Godot, Samuel Beckett portrays a spectrum of madness in humanity from a caregiver who is on the verge of mental collapse, a dementia-like dependent, a hypomanic master, to a slave who has lost all human reason, because of their lack of ethical care.
