    A Study of Cultural Content in the Editions of Senior High School English Textbooks Based on Curriculum Guidelines of 12-Year Basic Education in Taiwan

    Abstract: 英文教科書在培養學生聽、說、讀、寫四項基本英語技能方面有著重要作用,同時也加入了塑造價值觀、生活方式和態度的文化視角。作為通往全球社會的橋樑,英文教科書提供了與語言能力和文化理解相關的知識,使學生能夠有效地面對文化多樣性。
    本研究採用Moran 的五個文化維度(產品、實踐、觀點、社群和人物)進行編碼,分析了兩套高中英文教科書中的閱讀文本,探討每個文化維度在閱讀文本中的呈現方式。本研究的兩個研究問題是:(1) A 版本與B 版本的英文教科書的閱讀文本中引入了哪些文化元素? (2) 這兩套教科書系列在文化元素的呈現上有哪些相似和相異之處?研究結果顯示,雖然A 版本和B 版本這兩套教材都涵蓋了五種文化維度,但分佈比例有些不同。尤其是B 版本在這五種文化維度的呈現上更為均衡,相較之下,A 版本則稍微偏重某些維度。
    English textbooks play an essential role in equipping students with the four basic skills of English - listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They also introduce cultural perspectives which shape values, lifestyles, and attitudes. As a bridge to the global community, English textbooks provide knowledge related to language proficiency and cultural understanding, enabling students to navigate cultural diversity effectively.
    The study analyzes reading passages in English textbooks with the coding scheme based on Moran’s five cultural dimensions – products, practices, perspectives, communities, and persons. It analyzes how each cultural dimension is presented in reading passages in two senior high school English textbooks series, Series A and Series B. The two research questions are (1) What cultural elements are introduced in the reading passages of the two textbook series? (2) What are similarities and differences in the cultural elements presented by these two textbook series? The findings reveal that while both textbook series include all five cultural dimensions, they show different distribution patterns. In particular, Series B offers a more balanced coverage of the five cultural dimensions compared to Series A.
