The Chinese government adopts economic statecraft (positive and negative sanctions) to promote reunification. The existing literature explores how the Taiwanese government responds to China's economic statecraft. However, there is little discussion regarding the impact of Chinese economic statecraft on Taiwan's public opinion toward China. Hence, this research will extract survey data to explore the implications of Chinese economic statecraft on Taiwan's public opinion toward China. More specifically, this research will explore how China's positive and negative sanctions influence Taiwanese attitude toward the following agendas: (1) unification issues; (2) Taiwan's relations with the United States, and; (3) Taiwan's defense policy toward China. The result reveals that when the Taiwanese public fears China's negative sanctions, they are more prefer firmness and defensive policy against China. By contrast, when the Taiwanese public believes Chinese economic incentives help ensure Taiwan's economic benefit, they prefer the government adopting a moderate policy toward China.
