Following the result of 2016 Brexit referendum, the United Kingdom had officially withdraw from the European Union (EU) in 2021. As the first member state to leave EU, the UK’s departure represents an unprecedented event. This raises important questions about how the UK will handle its relations with EU and how Brexit impacts UK’s economic performance and diplomatic relationship during the post-Brexit era.
The UK-EU relationship over the past 50 years, which dates back to UK’s entry into European Economic Community (EEC) in 1973, faces significant changes. This led to serious challenges toward UK. In the early stages of Brexit, the UK’s economy had experienced substantial shocks, marked by rapidly rising inflation and a decline in economic performance. These phenomenon had fueled debates over whether leaving the EU was the right choice for the UK. Does Brexit present more opportunities for the country, or does it pose greater challenges to its national development?
To address these questions, this thesis will examine the trajectory of UK-EU relations to analyze the reason why UK decide to withdraw from EU. It will also explore the evolution of UK-EU relations in the post-Brexit era, alongside changes in the UK’s economic performance and external relations, to assess the overall impact of Brexit toward UK.
