    Title:
The LGBT in Taiwan Literature: A Critical History (Revised and Resubmitted)
    Authors:
    Contributors:
    Taiwan Literature;LGBT studies;gender studies;queer theory;literary history
    Date: 2016-10
    Issue Date: 2025-01-23 10:08:09 (UTC+8)
The project of The LGBT in Taiwan Literature: A Critical History will explore how the LGBT (lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and the transgender) materializes in Taiwan literature from the 1960s to the 2010s. I have already started the project without funding. Parts of the manuscript-in-process are published in a THCI CORE journal, submitted to a major journal in gender studies, and will be given as a keynote speech at the Lavender Conference at American University, DC in February 2014. Not only a survey of the lesbian, gay, and bisexual desires, subjects, and identities in Taiwan literature, this project is also an intervention into the commonly accepted epistemology of the LGBT. Inspired by the explorations of “queer temporalities” in recent English-language LGBT studies, I also examine how time and desire define each other in the context of Taiwan, and look for alternative temporalities in the shadow of the heteronormative mainstream. I emphasize the acts of historicizing and contextualizing texts in my reading and writing processes. This project will critically review and reconsider the related historical materials and commentaries from each decade under consideration. Also significant to this project are often the materials that do not look directly relevant to the LGBT in Taiwan literature. For example, the prominent figure in Taiwan literary studies, Shih-tao Yeh, had consistently commented on local and international lesbian and gay literature from the 1940s to the 1990s. This project is more discursive than introductory by intending to bring up arguments in response to the local and international scholars who have written on the LGBT in Taiwan. After having read the critical works done by the scholars in the United States, England, Japan, Australia and China, I plan to discuss with them about the LGBT in Taiwan.
